View a printable version

Please read carefully with your family. School is from 8:30-3:30 each Tuesday. Morning Assembly: There will be 15 minutes before school starts set aside for students and parents to say the Pledge of Allegiance, student led prayer, celebrate birthdays, special announcements and jokes of the day.  This is not mandatory and all are welcome. Attendance:  Excused absences are: illness, prior planned family trip for which arrangements to make up school work have been made. Notify the coordinator prior to a missed class/ school day, contact the teacher for makeup work and the hour(s) can be counted toward your contact hours with the teacher. Unexcused absences are: busy week, forgetting a class, attending a conflicting activity.  These absences cannot be counted toward your contact hours. Punctuality: Option school is only one day a week.  It is very important for you to have your child to school EARLY.  Coming in late makes it hard on your child, it is disrespectful to our teachers and other students in their class.   Please make extra effort to be at school early for your child (ren) to settle in for the day without the rush & frustration being late brings. Contact Mrs. Dorsey if you are going to be late to school or if you are going to be later then 10 minutes after the end of school to pick up your children. You can do ANYTHING for one day.  Anything!  :) Students drop - off & pick - up: Students 4th grade down to Kindergarten will need to be signed in & out of school by a parent or authorized adult.  Students 5th grade and up may sign themselves in & out of school. Please be prompt.  Notify the coordinator if you are running late or have made arrangements for your child to be picked up by someone else.  Communication with Mrs. Dorsey is vital. We will assign high school students to baby sit starting 10 minutes after school for any children who are not picked up.  You will need to pay for this service. Homework: Please take notice of the level of homework on your class choices.  0 to 5 with 0 meaning “no work outside of class” to 5 meaning there will be up to 5 hours of work outside of class time.  Allow time each day/ week to get this homework done.  The teachers expect the students to come prepared, homework done and ready for classes each week.  If the students do not get their homework done or brought in each week it is the teachers discretion as to what the consequences are in that specific class.  But there will be consequences. School Family Directory – We put out a directory each year. If you do not want to be listed in our school directory please email Mrs. Dorsey with this request.  If you would like your information restricted to just your email contact or phone number contact information please indicate the restrictions in an email to Mrs. Dorsey.  Otherwise we will list you with your names, address, phone, email, and children’s names. The safety of our children is high priority. No Nut Products in classrooms: All nuts, nut butters, oils, milks etc., are banned from our school due to serious food allergies that could cause death in some students enrolled.  Absolutely no nut products can be in the classrooms with students.  You will also notice that this is also the policy of Northern Hills Church. Kindergarten & 1st grade snack time - will be in the morning.   No snack time for older students.  Please eat breakfast. Lunches: Sharing of lunches is highly discouraged.  Lunches are forgotten at times, and sharing can only be done by permission from Mrs. Dorsey. Nut butter sandwiches are o.k. at lunch time only.  Hands MUST be washed immediately when done eating. Teachers &/ or volunteer parents need to know when your child is eating a nut butter sandwich for lunch. No NUT Table:  A student may sit at this table as long as their lunch is absolutely nut free with no hidden nut products in foods. Bullying & threatening at our school about any issue is not tolerated.  Parents please talk with your children about teasing or bullying, threatening others with food when it comes food allergies that can seriously hurt someone.  This is not acceptable in any instance. Cold lunches/ thermos is the order of our school day lunches.  (Can you imagine 50+ kids standing in line to use the microwave?) 5th grade and under “no pop” in lunches please.  Juice is o.k.  Water is by far better.  Please keep the candy and sugary snacks for a treat after school.  Sugar & junk foods DO affect your child’s performance. The microwave & refrigerator will be for the teachers use only. Birthdays: We will celebrate birthdays in our morning assembly.  Parents can bring stickers, trinkets to celebrate with the last class of the day.   Due to food allergies we cannot allow snacks to be brought in for these occasions.  Thank you. The Brighton Option School Dress policy will be: The Brighton Option School T-shirt is required at all school functions with the exclusion of our school programs/ plays. Long sleeve shirts underneath your school t-shirt is acceptable. Jeans, cargo pants, dress slacks are okay with absolutely no holes. Skirts MUST come to the knee. Shorts are acceptable with the following guidelines:  If you are standing up , hands to your side, the shorts MUST come even with the level of the index finger. HATS are NOT permitted in the classroom. NO sagging jeans or under shorts showing. Anything deemed immodest by the coordinator will receive one warning, then parents are called, and the child is sent home to change. Student Behavior Code: Students shall be expected to behave in a manner that is honorable; treating each other with mutual dignity and respect. Students will refrain from exhibiting displays of affection: kissing, hugging, etc., physical aggression, and from using profane language or actions. The teachers and coordinator of the Brighton Option Program will be responsible for determining whether a behavior is disruptive and would appreciate your help and support in maintaining a high standard. We have Kindergarten - 12th grade all under one roof. Older students need to watch language, actions, and attitudes since we have little eyes watching and little ears listening in on our words. Valuable and distracting items including, but not limited to: headphones, iPods, DVD players, cell phones, radios, lap top computers, or other devices or programs not associated with class work, are not allowed during school hours.  The only exception is laptop computers being used by the owner for class work.  Any other use would constitute a violation of the Student Conduct and Academic Accountability Contract. Consequences of disobedience: Appropriate discipline will be administered when needed to protect students, staff and property and maintain order.  Before discipline is administered, consideration of the frequency, severity of the offense, the student’s attitude, and the effect of the misconduct on the school environment will be given.  The following disciplinary methods may be used: Counseling by teacher, coordinator, Mrs. Dorsey, Principal, Dr. Synnott; Conference with parent or guardian; Withdrawal of privileges (field trips, recess); Suspension; Expulsion. Parent Involvement: Parent involvement is essential to your child’s success in this program.  Please check with teachers frequently to make sure your child is getting the homework done for class.  If homework is not finished the student will spend recess or needed class time finishing the work.  Attend the Parent / Teacher conferences held twice a year (if needed) or have a phone conference. Your child’s success depends on it. Parent/Student Helpers; There will be approximately 20 hours of time that we would need your help each year.  This program cannot function without the help of the parents.   You need to think of this program like a “co-op” where the parents work together toward a goal of educating our children.  Helping with lunch, supervising or helping with clean up is very important to the success of our program. In the spirit of excellence, we leave Northern Hills Church better then we found it. You have the option of having your middle school/ high school children fill in for your times of helping.  There is also an option (what we are all about) of paying $22 a day or $132 a year for someone to fill in your helper scheduled times.   The money goes to the person who is filling in for you. Communication is also vital.  If you sign up to help on a certain day and cannot work, please, call and trade with another parent.  Trading days or times to work is good. Leaving us in a lurch with kids out on the playground and no one to help watch is bad.  If you sign up for a time to help and you do not show up I will be calling you to see why you are not there. Announcements will be emailed out the day/evening before school each week and posted up for reading on our school day. School expense for the year: School t-shirts/ Hoodie (Navy or purple)                                         $7.50 -  $20 per item Activity fund (student parties, teacher gifts, volunteer gifts)        $25 per student Possible school expenses: Brighton Clubs (Clubs are optional)                                                     $5 per student Ameritowne / International Towne (both optional classes)           $20 per student Destination Imagination (optional class)               Approximately $35-dependent        on class enrollment.
